Phil Bartlett is the Senate Majority Leader for the 124th Maine Legislature. At 32, Bartlett is one of the youngest members elected to be majority leader in the history of the Maine Senate. He is in his third term representing Senate District 6, which includes the communities of Gorham, Scarborough, and Westbrook. Energy policy has been a major focus of Phil's work in the Legislature. In his first two terms he chaired the Utilities and Energy Committee, where he helped pass legislation to expand energy efficiency in Maine, to implement Maine's participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and to promote the development of renewable energy in the state. In 2009 he was appointed to chair the Joint Select Committee on Maine's Energy Future. The committee has been tasked with developing a comprehensive plan for achieving energy sustainability, reducing consumption, lowering carbon emissions and promoting economic development through renewable energy resources in the state. Phil grew up in Gorham and attended Gorham public
schools. He was actively involved in scouting throughout his youth,
steadily working his way from Cub scout through the ranks to Eagle
scout. Scouting provided opportunities to visit the State House and
meet the governor, to go camping on a regular basis, and to learn
the value of community service and civic leadership. In 2001 Phil was admitted to practice law in Maine and Massachusetts. He moved back to Gorham and spent the next year clerking for Chief Justice Leigh Saufley of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. He also began writing for his local newspaper, the Gorham Times. He has served as president of the Gorham Historical Society as well as president of the Baxter Memorial Library Association. He currently serves on the board of the Presumpscot Regional Land Trust, and he has been appointed to board of the Gorham Economic Development Corporation and the Cumberland County Human Services Advisory Committee. Phil is also a member of First Parish Congregational Church in Gorham. Goto top
